What Is Hypertension Screening?
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a common condition that often has no noticeable symptoms. Left unmanaged, it can increase the risk of serious complications including stroke, heart failure and kidney disease.
Our dedicated hypertension clinic assesses patients with suspected high blood pressure and manages patients with an existing diagnosis of chronic hypertension. Assessment may include 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and an echocardiogram, used to check whether sustained high blood pressure has affected the heart or other organs.
We accept referrals from any GP, and bulk billing is available for eligible patients with a valid Medicare referral.
What Happens During Hypertension Assessment
Your cardiologist will review your blood pressure history, current symptoms, and any relevant risk factors such as family history, diet and lifestyle. Blood pressure is measured in two phases, systolic, when the heart pumps blood, and diastolic, when the heart rests between beats. Both are used to assess your cardiovascular risk. If needed, you may be asked to wear a 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor, which records your blood pressure at intervals throughout your normal daily activities. Depending on your results, your cardiologist may recommend further testing, such as an echocardiogram, or discuss an ongoing management plan with you and your GP.
When Is Hypertension Screening Recommended?
Hypertension screening may be recommended if your GP has identified elevated blood pressure readings, if you have a family history of high blood pressure or heart disease, or if you have an existing diagnosis of hypertension that requires ongoing review. Hypertension screening may also be appropriate if you have previously experienced heart-related symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, or dizziness, as recommended by your cardiologist following a clinical assessment.
