What Is a Coronary Calcium Score?
A coronary artery calcium (CAC) score is a non-invasive test that measures the amount of calcium plaque in the arteries supplying your heart. A higher score generally reflects a greater degree of plaque build up and is associated with a higher risk of a future cardiac event. This test can provide an individual assessment of your cardiac risk before symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath appear, making it particularly useful for people who have risk factors but no current symptoms, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease. This test is conducted at a specialist radiology centre and reviewed in conjunction with your cardiologist here at Springwood Cardiology.
What Happens During a Coronary Calcium Score Test
The test is performed using a CT scanner at a specialist radiology centre, not on site at our clinic. No injection or contrast dye is required for a standard calcium score test. The scan itself is quick, usually taking only a few minutes. Your score is calculated from the scan and reviewed by your cardiologist, who will discuss what it means for your individual cardiac risk.
When Is a Coronary Calcium Score Recommended?
A coronary calcium score is generally recommended for people who have cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a family history of heart disease, or a history of smoking, but who do not currently have symptoms of heart disease. It is not typically used for people who already have diagnosed coronary artery disease or who are experiencing active symptoms, your cardiologist can advise whether this test is appropriate for you.
